It’s only April, but the new extended “Summer” Peak Season on the Med is already underway. Some Med-area destinations are currently reporting 15%+ YOY increases from 2022’s record numbers, and everything kicks into high gear in May.

In the coming weeks, you can expect demand to start outpacing parking and hotel availability, particularly on popular islands and coastal hotspots across Greece, Italy, Spain, the French Riviera, etc.

There are also some major Billionaire Social Calendar events coming up like the Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix.

Below are some pro tips to help you manage the madness. Also, check the bottom of this article for our Med Airport Cheatsheet.

Nice, France

Med Peak Season: Passenger Experience FAQs & Prep

Here are some key questions to be asking so you can manage stakeholder expectations:

  • What is the detailed ARR/DEP process?
  • Where is CIQ clearance happening – main terminal, GAT, FBO, etc?
  • What does the passport hand-off process look like?
  • Is there a long ride from where the aircraft is parked to the terminal or FBO? If so, how long will this take?
  • Do pax need to wait in the same lines as commercial travelers for CIQ? If so, are there options to separate and/or expedite passengers through the process (compliantly, of course)?
  • Does the airport have an option to arrange VIP customs? If so, how long in advance must it be arranged?
  • How long does the total CIQ process typically take?
  • What happens after CIQ? Will the handler escort pax to the ground transport and does crew need to be with the pax the entire time?
  • What is the total estimated time on the ground from landing to leaving via ground transport?
  • For departure, how early do the pax need to arrive at the airport?
  • How long does the departure process usually take?
  • What are the potential issues if the pax wants to leave with items acquired in large quantities (like cases of wine)?

Feasibility-IQ is a great resource to help you answer a lot of this.

To further safeguard your passengers’ ground experience, talk to your Trip Support team about having an A2G Agent supervise your Med missions on the ground, when you aren’t already using Universal Aviation as your ground handler. A2G is really popular during peak season in the French Rivera and across the Med at these smaller airports that have less built-out infrastructure and services – and that routinely struggle with supporting the needs of business aviation during busy season.

Worsening Parking Shortages Across the Med

Drop and Go’s will Likely be Your Best Option

While you probably prefer to park at the same airport as the principal’s destination, Drop and Go’s will likely be the best (or only) option in the Med this summer, due to heavy demand and airport restrictions. If you plan for this in advance, your life will be much easier, and you can lock in arrangements sooner.

Think Non-traditional Parking Options

Our recommendation, take the option you can lock in now vs. taking the wait and see approach.  With that, we expect non-traditional alternates like Milan, Dubrovnik, and even Frankfurt to be good long-term parking options.

One BIG advantage to this strategy: Hotels. Further inland, you’ll have your choice of chains and preferred accommodation options with more flexible cancellation options. In Greece and several other popular destinations, you won’t receive parking confirmation until two weeks before the trip. That’s going to be too late to book most preferred hotels. We’ve seen crew insist on this option and end up having to stay at less-than-ideal hotels in undesirable areas of the city/island.

Other factors to consider here are supply chain struggles, strikes, protests, and fuel availability. These non-traditional parking locations are further away from the epicenter of activity (i.e., MADNESS 🤪) and less likely to experience issues.

A Stretched Supply Chain. Tips for Mitigating Issues.

Bizav Supply Chain Infographic

The Summer demand will put stress on aviation service providers and the supply chain – including airport authorities, handlers, hotels, chauffeurs, catering, etc.

Be aware that these challenges WILL exist this summer. Here’s how you can help mitigate them:

  • Plan ahead and make arrangements as soon as schedule is known.
  • Stay within our network (Universal Aviation handling/ Air Culinaire Worldwide catering/ Drivania Chauffeurs) if able. We have more control to reduce the risk of error and have more flexibility and speed to make last-minute adjustments across all service delivery areas, when needed.
  • Get your parking confirmation prior to arranging hotels and other services that are dependent on where you’ll be overnighting.
  • Ask what the ETA is on parking confirmations from the airport authority. For some destinations, you may have to wait until very close to your arrival date, which impacts all related service arrangements. An airport that can confirm sooner may be a better option. We put a cheat sheet for you at the end of this email.
  • Avoid making changes. You may lose preferred options you’ve already secured, and it adds more risk of something getting missed.
  • Watch for reports on strikes, protests, and fuel supply issues – all this WILL be happening.
  • Airline cancelations were a big issue last year. Check recent flight cancelation stats to see which airlines are performing more reliably before booking with them for any crew swaps or connections.
  • Set expectations with stakeholders that these challenges will exist this year.
  • Try to be patient with minor delays and inconveniences if you experience them.
  • Check Feasibility-IQ for the latest intelligence on any destination you are researching or visiting.

Fuel Supply Challenges in Italy and across the Med

  • Expect fuel supply shortages at popular European destinations.
    • Don’t assume fuel will be available.
    • Book fuel early, don’t leave it to a Friday. Secure releases a week+ in advance if doable.
    • Be specific about how many gallons you need.
    • Double check availability with your supplier prior to departure and have a Plan B in place with an alternate provider, just in case.
    • Fuel on arrival while supply is available. Don’t wait until departure.
    • Consider tankering fuel at high-demand destinations where supply issues may exist.

Med Peak Season: Charter Ops, Blanket Permits, & Cabotage

If you’re planning on operating any charter flights to Greece, Italy, or Spain this summer, we recommend securing your blanket permits now.

Trying to get a last-minute permit for short-notice trips is not ideal. A 12-month blanket permit significantly improves your operating flexibility.

For Greece and Italy, our Global Regulatory Services team can help you apply for these blanket permits.

For Spain, CAA doesn’t allow third parties to apply for these, so you’ll need to do this yourself. Keep in mind, Spain only allows three one-shot permits per season, so getting a blanket permit is advised. Warning: the process to apply is onerous.

We’re also starting to see requests for trips that would be considered cabotage. Nearly all countries in the EU, including all of the popular Med hotspots, have some variation of cabotage, meaning that for any domestic legs, you cannot carry passengers that are not associated with your int’l legs.

Ramp inspections are common and violating cabotage rules could result in both significant fines and denial for future ops.

Check with us on your specific flight scenarios.

In-flight Catering Woes and Tips for Peak Season

FoodAround the world, we’re receiving more reports from operators experiencing challenges with in-flight catering. Supply chain shortages are wreaking havoc on sourcing, and providers are struggling to staff at levels needed to meet the demand. Hours of operation among providers are also continually changing, highlighting the importance of ample lead time for orders to ensure that the caterer is open and available.

Our catering experts at Air Culinaire Worldwide suggest the following:

  • Avoid last minute orders and changes. Order at least two full days in advance (local time) for domestic flights and five full days in advance for international flights.
  • Manage your pax expectations by channeling them into cuisine that is commonly available in that area and keep your orders simple. Avoid ordering off-menu, last-minute, hard-to-find items, as this will lead to the delays in confirming the order.
  • Be careful when ordering from restaurants. It adds complexity to the service delivery. If you order food from a restaurant, be aware that there could be safety and packaging issues, as most restaurants are not experienced with preparing food for in-flight. Even if your order is through your caterer, this could lead to delays as the caterer will need to pick up the food, chill and repackage the order to maintain proper food temperatures.
  • Be wary of new caterers. There’s been a flurry of new, untested caterers with no track record of safety, offering service in recent months.
  • Limit the use of food delivery services. These systems were designed for individual use, not commercial use. They do not delivery consistently and have no means to advise when an order will not be delivered, which happens frequently.

To mitigate some of these issues, we recommend staying within our Air Culinaire Worldwide network as much as possible to avoid many of these issues, and it gives us better control over the catering order fulfillment versus using a non-network caterer.

Med Country-by-Country Cheat Sheet

Here’s a quick reference guide for some of the most popular airports for accessing the Med:

CROATIA

  • Split (LDSP):
    • Curfews: Airport open 0400-2000 UTC, no General Aviation Terminal (GAT).
    • Parking/PPR: Very limited parking during peak season and high-traffic events, especially for overnight. Requests for parking and the PPR status will be evaluated only 14 days prior the operations.
    • Charter Permits: Required. Lead time is 3 working days.
    • CIQ: 24 Hrs
  • Dubrovnik (LDDU):
    • Curfews : Airport open 0400-2100 UTC, no General Aviation Terminal (GAT).
    • Parking/PPR : Available for long stays.
    • Charter Permits : Required. Lead time is 3 working days.
    • CIQ: 24 Hrs

SOUTHERN FRANCE

Nice, France

  • Nice (LFMN):
    • Curfews: LFMN is a 24-hour AOE with a General Aviation Terminal (GAT).
    • A-CDM: In November 2019, Nice launched Airport Collaborative Decision Making (ACDM). CDM programs determine if airway and airport slots match flight plans. In the event of a missed match, flight plans are auto-cancelled. If operators are not careful, both airport and airway slots may be cancelled as a result of even small schedule changes. Our blog has more information about A-CDM in Spain and Italy.
    • Parking: is very limited during peak season and high-traffic events. Requests for parking and the PPR status will not be confirmed until a week before arrival. Keep in mind that changes to your schedule will cancel any confirmed parking approvals and will require you to re-submit your parking request. During this period LFMN often denies parking requests and will not confirm parking status until close to day of operation. If you’re not able to confirm parking at LFMN, you’ll still be able to obtain airport slots to drop off/pick up passengers. Longer-term parking is particularly expensive at Nice (LFMN) as it’s charged on an escalating scale, depending on how long you stay. For this reason, you may want to consider repositioning your aircraft if passengers are staying in the Nice area for any length of time. In Nice, any quick turn less than three hours is always accepted.
    • Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ): clearance is normally available at the LFMN GAT 0800-2100 local.
    • Fuel: Fuel services close at about 2130 local and reopen at about 0630 local – this does not mean it is fully operational at this time. Overtime fueling is possible at LFMN with prior arrangement. Note: You must make these arrangements with your handler ahead of arrival and your departure flight plan needs to be in the system showing a night departure. If it is too close to the morning, say 0430/0500LT the night duty fuel supplier will not be called, you will have to wait till opening hours. If you are arriving and need fuel for departure, you can call ATC and they will call the fueling agent. The agent has one hour to arrive. For short-notice fuel uplift requests during night hours, it’s possible to contact Air Traffic Control (ATC), which will contact the fueler to come out. Best practice for LFMN is to fuel on arrival, or at least prior to day of departure.
  • Cannes (LFMD):
    • Best airport choice for: Events, destinations, price, long-term parking (when the aircraft is under 35 Tonnes)
    • Curfews: LFMD is not a 24-hour airport. LFMD operating hours are normally 0800-2000 local. During summer months, however, operating hours are 0800-sunset + 30 min, with the latest possible operation at 2230 local. No overtime is possible for LFMD.
    • Slots/PPR: Airport slots are required for the entire Summer Peak Season from May 16-Sept 16.
    • Parking: During peak season, it’s recommended that airport slots/PPRs be requested one to two months in advance in order to secure aircraft parking priority. Although parking will not be confirmed until close to day of operation, requests are processed on a first-come-first-served basis.
    • Aircraft limitations: LFMD is limited to aircraft with maximum takeoff weights of up to 35 metric tons for a jet engine (a G4 can land but not take off with full fuel.)
    • Fuel: Aviation fuel is available with no limitations.
  • Toulon LFTH):
    • Curfews: Airport hours are 0630-2300 LT MON-FRI; 0700-2100 LT SAT; 0800-2300 LT SUN & BANK HOLIDAYS.
    • Slots/PPR: LFTH is a military airport, and PPRs are needed for all operations. Minimum PPR lead times are four hours in the case of domestic flights from within France, 24 hours of French office hours if you’re operating in/out of Schengen areas, and 48 French office hours when operating from non-Schengen countries. Note that PPRs for LFTH must be obtained by your 3rd-party provider via a special website.
    • Parking: Aircraft parking is on a first–come, first-serve basis, and scheduled commercial airlines take priority.
    • CIQ: Customs is automatically notified when your PPR is submitted. They do not always come out, so if you need your passport stamped, you will have to specifically request that they come. Gendec approve with PPR can’t be modified under 24 hours prior arrival for Schengen and non-Schengen countries.
    • Fuel: Aviation fuel is available with no limitations. Note: airlines have priority and there is only one driver.

GREECE

Greek Island Peak Season

  • Athens (LGAV) :
    • Curfews: LGAV is a 24-hour AOE with a General Aviation Terminal (GAT).
    • Parking: Very limited during summer season. Requests for parking will not be confirmed until the day prior to ops and for a max stay of 24h. We expect further limitations on parking as GA parking ramp is smaller than the previous years. Currently it remains 24h but should become 2h as we go deeper into the season. Ferry flights positioning for parking only are not permitted. It’s advised that operators planning long stays consider relocating to smaller fields where parking can be booked in advance and for the duration of their stay.
    • Charter Permits: Non-EU Charter operators need to obtain a landing permit prior to operating charter flights into Greece. A/C with a max capacity of 19 seats can obtain annual permits. A/C with a capacity greater than 19 seats can obtain only ad-hoc permits. 10 working days prior notice is recommended. Domestic charter flights are not allowed to Non-EU commercial operators.
    • CIQ: CIQ is performed at the General Aviation Terminal.
    • Fuel: Fuel peaks are not known yet for the upcoming season, definitely around 0600z and 1000z but not sure what will be the afternoon peak. As priority is provided to scheduled airline traffic, delays may occur on the peak of the day, mornings between 0800-0900 LT, noon between 1200-1400 and afternoons between 1600-1800 LT.
  • Mykonos (LGMK):
    • Curfews: LGMK is a 24-hour AOE.
    • Parking: Restricted to 40 mins parking between 01 May – 30 Sep.
    • Slots: Limited. The window for application opens 14 days prior to ops. Slot tolerance is +/- 15 mins. Heavy fines apply for slot violations and sanctions may apply when an aircraft or an operator is found to misbehave repeatedly.
    • FLS: Eurocontrol monitors the whole Greek airspace suspending FPLs not matching the approved slots.
Domestic charter flights are not allowed to Non EU commercial operators.
    • CIQ: CIQ is now performed at the new lounge. It’s located next to the terminal, available only to GABA flights. Security and CIQ are performed there and only luggage on dept is processed through the commercial terminal for proper screening. It’s not subject to booking as it’s not optional but mandatory to all GABA a/c and the cost is 2.000 euros per live leg (if an a/c carries pax both inbound and outbound sums up to 4.000 euros lounge cost)
    • Push Back: GL7T is not assigned to push back stands as the tow bar is short and there is a safety issue during the procedure (on the 90 degrees turn the tow truck hits the a/c nose) Due to this, two parking spots are required for self-maneuvering and it’s approved only during late night, early morning.
  • Santorini (LGSR) :
    • Curfews: LGSR is a 24-hour AOE.
    • Parking: Restricted to 40 mins between 01 May – 30 Sep.
    • Slots: Limited. Window for application opens 14 days prior to ops. Slot tolerance is +/- 15 mins. Heavy fines may apply on slot violations and sanctions may apply when an aircraft or an operator is found to misbehave repeatedly.
    • FLS: Eurocontrol monitors the whole Greek airspace suspending FPLs not matching the approved slots.
Domestic charter flights are not allowed to Non EU commercial operators.
    • CIQ: There are no facilities for GA/BA passengers. All inbound / outbound pax will follow the same process as airline pax, with priority provided when possible.
    • Push Back: Parking area consists of mainly nose-in stands. Aircraft operators are required to check with their handler that a suitable tow bar and head is available; otherwise, they have to carry their own and use it if needed.
  • Paros (LGPA):
    • Curfews: LGPA has specific ops hours and is not an AOE. Inbound flights must originate from an EU/Schengen country.
    • Parking: Limited and overnight stays are not allowed during peak season in an effort to accommodate as many turnarounds as possible.
    • Slots: Limited. Window for application opens 14 days prior to ops. Slot tolerance is +/- 15 mins. Heavy fines apply on slot violations and sanctions may apply when an aircraft or an operator is found to misbehave repeatedly.
    • FLS: Eurocontrol monitors the whole Greek airspace suspending FPLs not matching the approved slots.
Domestic charter flights are not allowed to Non EU commercial operators.
    • CIQ: There are no facilities for GA/BA passengers. All inbound / outbound pax will follow the same process as airline pax, with priority provided by our agent.

During this period LEVC often denies parking requests and will not confirm parking status until close to day of operation. If you’re not able to confirm parking at LEVC, you’ll still be able to obtain airport slots to drop off/pick up passengers.
    • Charter Permits: EU charters with EU Blanket permits receive almost immediate confirmation. Non-EU charters usually take 72 hours.
    • CIQ: Available at the LEVC GAT 24/7.
    • Fuel: Fuel services are 24/7. This does not mean it is always fully operational. Best practice for LEVC is to fuel on arrival, or at least prior to the day of departure and send as in advance as possible the fuel release to reconfirm with fuel uplifter.
