{"id":39073,"date":"2021-08-10T14:46:55","date_gmt":"2021-08-10T19:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.universalweather.com\/blog\/?p=39073"},"modified":"2024-09-11T09:52:15","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T14:52:15","slug":"new-portugal-carbon-tax-impact-to-business-aviation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.universalweather.com\/blog\/new-portugal-carbon-tax-impact-to-business-aviation\/","title":{"rendered":"New Portugal Carbon Tax \u2013 Impact to business aviation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On July 1, 2021, Portugal implemented a carbon tax on unscheduled commercial (charter) general aviation operators.<\/p>\n<p>The carbon tax is applied to charter flights departing from airports or aerodomes in Portuguese territory.<\/p>\n<p>This fee is according <a href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/JFDBCPNExKsPXvqsPQGUS?domain=eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\">Ordinance No. 38\/2021, of February 16<sup>th<\/sup><\/a>, charged on air transport passengers, and has a fixed value of 2 \u20ac (two euros).<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Who is required to pay the Portuguese carbon tax?<\/h2>\n<p>Per Portuguese civil aviation authorities, the tax only applies to unscheduled commercial (charter) flights.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>How much is the tax?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Two Euros (02 \u20ac) for each commercial air transport title, for flights departing from airports and aerodromes located in Portuguese territory.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>When is payment due?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Settlement and collection is due the moment where the ticket is issued<\/li>\n<li>Reporting deadline \u2013 until the 5<sup>th<\/sup> day of the following month of passenger boarding;<\/li>\n<li>Deadline for payment of the fee to ANAC &#8211; made until the 20<sup>th<\/sup> of the following month of passenger boarding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Can Universal make pay the tax on behalf of operators?<\/h2>\n<p>No. After speaking with Portuguese authorities, our global regulatory experts have been informed Universal will <strong>NOT <\/strong>be able to pay the tax on behalf of our customers.<\/p>\n<p>Your ground handler will have to take care of the tax payment as part of their other handling services utilizing their Portuguese VAT number.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Relevant dates:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Settlement and collection by air carriers &#8211; as of 07\/01\/2021, at the time of issuance of the transport ticket;<\/li>\n<li>Reporting deadline \u2013 until the 5th business day of the month following the passenger boarding;<\/li>\n<li>Deadline for transferring the fee to ANAC \u2013 made until the 20th of the month following the passenger&#8217;s departure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>More information and FAQs<\/h2>\n<p>Portuguese civil aviation has a <a href=\"https:\/\/protect-us.mimecast.com\/s\/e8mDCQWGyKUYPBmtYYvxW?domain=eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\">website<\/a> with more information and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anac.pt\/vPT\/Generico\/taxacarbono\/perguntasfrequentes\/Paginas\/PerguntasFrequentes.aspx\">FAQs<\/a>.
